I know I haven't been posting a ton of new stuff here lately. That's mainly because I'm also trying to be a reliable contributor at the other sites I write for. And if you ask the editors on those sites, they'll probably say that I'm even not so much doin' that.
That said, I'm over at DadCentric today, where I've posted a few thoughts on the shocking (?) reveal from DC Comics that the Green Lantern is gay.
No, not this Green Lantern:
This one:
Way different. And not as much of a ground-shaker for comics fans. Still, an interesting development. Or not.
Either way, you can read about it here.

I don't like that Green Lantern is suddenly gay. Not because he is gay, but for the same reason I don't like that Spiderman was suddenly killed and replaced with Black Spiderman - new and improved. I don't think it can be denied that superheroes are extremely dominated by the straight, white male version - sprinkled with a few hot, white females. We need more diversity than that, because our culture is more diverse and has an ever-increasing acceptance of difference. But really, I like my Spiderman. And I like my Green Lantern. And I don't think it makes anything better to suddenly make changes like this - it's a gimmick, as you mentioned on DadCentric. It's hard to take seriously.
ReplyDeleteI'd much rather they made new superheroes with these traits. And make them own it.
Indeed, Nat. And I do think DC does have a couple other gay characters in their storylines, both male and female. My DC knowledge doesn't go deep enough, but some of the comments after that DC blog article do refer to other superhero-y characters that have been gay for a long time. I should probably go back and learn more.
ReplyDeleteHuh - didn't know that. The Internet will provide answers :)
